What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured psychotherapy approach that encourages brief focus on a distressing memory while simultaneously using bilateral stimulation (commonly eye movements, but sometimes taps or tones). This process is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion linked to trauma memories.

What concerns can EMDR support?

EMDR is most widely known for trauma‑related concerns and post‑traumatic stress symptoms. It is also sometimes used when past experiences continue to feel “stuck” and are linked to distress in the present.

Examples of situations where VR‑assisted exposure may be used (depending on clinician competence and fit) include: fear of heights, fear of flying, fear of enclosed spaces, and practice in simulated social/performance situations. Exposure therapy is a recognized approach across a range of fear‑based concerns, and VR is one way to deliver exposure when real‑world exposure is not practical.

EMDR is one option within trauma‑informed care. Your therapist will help you decide whether EMDR is a fit, based on your goals, current stability, and clinical considerations.

What does the evidence say?

EMDR is included among trauma‑focused psychotherapy options discussed in major PTSD guidance resources, including the VA/DoD guideline overview and NICE’s PTSD guideline materials.

Like any psychotherapy approach, outcomes vary by individual. We focus on collaborative planning, informed consent, and pacing to support safety and fit.

What does EMDR therapy look like?

EMDR is commonly delivered as individual therapy. Many descriptions of EMDR note a structured, phase‑based approach, often provided weekly (or more frequently) for a time‑limited course depending on needs.

What happens during an EMDR session?

During EMDR processing, the therapist guides you to briefly focus on a target memory while using bilateral stimulation (often eye movements). Your therapist monitors pacing, comfort, and readiness, and you can pause at any time.

EMDR is commonly described as not requiring extended trauma narratives or homework in the way some other trauma‑focused approaches may, although therapy plans vary by client and clinician

Informed consent and expectations

Before starting EMDR, we review benefits, limitations, and alternatives, and confirm informed consent. Therapy outcomes vary by individual, and we do not promise specific results.
